pc turns itself off while converting avi files

Hi everyone, new to the site and need some help.
I`m running vista home, amd dual core processor with 2gb ram
The problem I have is with converting avi files to dvd. I have tried 4 different programs but the same thing happens every time.
The process starts and after 20% or so the pc switches off, if I try to restart straight away I get the blue screen saying fatal error etc. If I wait for half an hour it starts up fine again.
I can surf the net, play games etc all day long without a problem so I dont think its an overheat problem, also I`ve tried to do it when the pc has been off all night but the problem persists.
Ant ideas anyone? Help would be greatly appreciatted.

Re: pc turns itself off while converting avi files

it is immiterial if the pc is off overnight, the problem occurs quickly if it put under load that it cannot support
if you have to wait before restarting would indicate heat
it could be heat or power or a combination of both
watch your tempretures with this
http://www.softpedia.com/progDownloa...oad-29890.html
what video card and power supply do you have in it,post the details from the label on the side
brand
wattage
amp on the 12v+ line[s]
you need to post any bsod errors that you receive in full

Re: pc turns itself off while converting avi files

Hi, thanks for the speedy reply.
I`m going to be really annoyed if its a psu problem, the pc is only 3 months old from dell.
graphics card is....
Integrated NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150 LE graphic GPU

The sensorsview readings show...
cpu 62/142f
sys 0/32f
aux 0/32f

It does say under fans section
cpu fan 0 rpm
sys fan 0 rpm
aux fan 0 rpm
does this mean they are not running?

this is the recent log from coretemp if that helps..

Session start: 16:49:20, December 30, 2007

Re: pc turns itself off while converting avi files

i am not familiar with amd cpu's but 62c looks like the problem,if that's in normal running when burning it is going to go a lot higher
you can ask dell to fix it under warranty or redo the paste
http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm
dells the prefered path
if the cpu was not running neither would the computer
see what you get with these

the speedfan programme shows cpu at 62c, but I cant change my fan speed to compensate as it didnt detect the smart feature on install.
It does say that desired temp should be 40c though so it is high I agree.
Thanks again

Re: pc turns itself off while converting avi files

the max temp is 65c,so the temp has to be brought down,it will be going over that when you are burning, hence the closedown
