High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
Hey,
I have just come onto Vista after a long time and its seems slow and taking a while to load things. My memory usage is also a bit high and i have seen it go upto 1.27GB. ![]() I have attached a screenshot of it. there isnt anything out unusal about what is running. Task Manager.jpg also, I cannot click anything in IE7 i can only type in a website and scroll up and down, i cannot click on any of the pull down menu's and click on any of the emotions and they arnt animated on viewing them. Also, i cannot use Windows Media Player. ![]() Any ideas? Jay ![]() |

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
Post a screenshot of your running processes, tick VM size and handles in the view => slect columns menu.
I'm not familiar with Vista so don't know if I'll be able to help much.

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
How long have you had vista installed? I know the first 24 to 48 hours it takes up alot of memory and cpu cycles due to the indexing service that is utterly useless.
Do what justpassingby said as well. as that is allot of handles and it shows you oly have 9 megs of ram free.

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
In XP you can disable the indexing service or even uninstall it completely. Don't know with Vista, lemme check.
Ok, found this : http://4sysops.com/?p=457

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
We can't see all your processes there. Maximize the window so that we can see more and if needed scroll down, take another screenshot and merge both in paint. Add the VM size and handles column : do you see the view menu at the top of the task manager ? Go there, click on select columns and tick the box next to VM size and next to handles. VM means virtual memory.
52 running processes is a lot, it's no suprise your memory is filled. We've already told you that you should avoid installing unneeded stuff. Google with the name of your processes there and see to which programs they're related, I don't have the time to do it for you. Uninstall the programs you don't need. Keep only one antivirus and Vista's firewall, get rid of all your other registry cleaners, anti-spywares and stuff like that. Keep only one single non-resident anti-spyware, like adaware or spybot, to do a monthly scan.

Bottom.jpg I cannot see anything in any columns or columns to add on virtual memory. The installed programs that i have on vista is only the stuff that i use and need. |

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
Do you see the "file" "options" "view" "help" menus at the top of the window ? Click on view then click on select columns. It will look like this. Tick handle counts, virtual memory size and image path name.

See figure D here (4th pic) and read the text just above it :
http://articles.techrepublic.com.com...1-6161050.html What options do you have when clicking on select columns ? Are you logged as a guest ?

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
Ok, not familiar with Vista as I said. Tick memory working set, commit size, paged pool, non paged pool and handles (hopefully we can see all columns in one window).
You could also post another screenshot with the image path name so that I can see to which program each process is related. Don't forget to expand the image path name column to show the complete path. And in the performances tab click on ressources monitor and post a screenshot of that as well.

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
Seems Vista uses 3 times more processes than XP for the OS only.
Are you using Vista's firewall or PC tools firewall ? I'd go with Vista's firewall and uninstall PC tools. The svchost files are what's taking the most of the memory usage. Right-click the two of them that are using 50MB in working set and click "go to service(s)". This should allow us to see what's in them (svchost are hosting several other system processes). Apart from that there seems to be no particular problem. From what I saw on google more than 50 running processes and 17.000 handles is not unusual in Vista. Keep in mind winamp and firefox are heavy cpu users

Re: High CPU and Memory Usage and others.
For firewall solution, I recommend a extern box like LinkSys wrt54g (Wireless). If you've put Vista on your XP machine, you've made a terrible mistake.
1 - Vista take a lot more ressources than XP. So a good XP system isn't the meaning of a good Vista system. 2 - Vista smell like sh*t (Every body using Vista prefer Xp). 3 - Vista taste like sh*t (None of the features Ms had announced for vista are included (like new file system), except aero). 4 - Vista look like sh*t(aero isn't good enough. Look for comparison between Aero and compiz-fusion). 5 - Vista sound like sh*t(Vista is an over-charged XP) 6 - Vista make me think about ME (is anybody remember ME?). I recommend to return to Windows XP or even better a Linux or BSD distro that fit your needs. Last edited by Kataclysm : 09-05-2007 at 01:21 PM. |
