High memory usage
Hello, I installed 2GB of memory today and Vista is using 485Mb of that while I'm idle. I thought maybe this was superfetch so I disabled it and rebooted, but system is still using 485mb at idle. What could be using all that ram?

Re: High memory usage
If you have superfetch on (check by running services.msc in the run box) then I would say that is normal. If not, your in the same boat as me.

Re: High memory usage
When I had superfetch enabled I think I saw it using as much as 850mb. I wonder if I should have gone with 4GB instead of 2GB. Then I could say use all you want.

Yes, it's perfectly safe to disable superfetch. Superfetch is supposed to be a good thing though, speeding up programs you most often use the next time you start them. I've just chosen to go on without it, no reason in particular. Right now I'm trying to determine how many services I can safely disable. Last edited by chin : 08-31-2007 at 05:22 PM. |

Re: High memory usage
There's quite a few other services you can safely disable too which are probably eating more of your RAM. You may want to check out the following link as it has been very helpful to me:
http://www.speedyvista.com/services.html Also, if you have third party indexing programs installed, you may want to think about disabling them or changing their settings as they can eat a huge amount of resouces. Hope that helps ![]()

What would some other third party indexing programs to maybe look at? The laptop is totally new, not sure if Dell maybe installed something like that. Thanks for the link, I will look at it. |

Re: High memory usage
Programs such as Nero 7 as that includes Nero Scout which indexes files. There's others too but I can't think at the mo.
Anyway, make a start with the services as that should make a difference for now.

Re: High memory usage
Yes, right now I'm toggling back and forth between speedyvista and blackviper trying to make a reg script right for my needs. Now I'd just like to get rid of the remaining services that are holding ports open or listening and I be set. I'm thinking some of these can't be done by simply disabling them via services.msc, I think some need to be done in the registry.
