[SOLVED] Updating from Basic to Premium
I have an update disk from when I upgraded to premium on my prior pc. I'm now trying to get premium installed on my current pc which now has windows basic. It gets to the final step like everything is going to be fine, then it says one of my programs isn't compatible. It then says to restart my computer and install the upgrade again. However when my computer restarts it stays on a screen where 'windows rollover' is highlighted and doesn't give me a chance to select 'windows vista.' Even if i was able to select it in time, I might be starting over the install from scratch anyway and it still might not work. I ran upgrade advisor and it tells me that 'gateway utilities' isn't compatible. I did an online chat with gateway support and they were no help at all. I kept asking what 'Gateway Utilities' was and how do I get rid of it? They couldn't even answer. They said that upgrade advisor is meant for an upgrade from anything but vista to vista (not basic to premium.) They said I need to contact Microsoft. My support with them is no longer free I told them. They then said I must have some sort of software or hardware conflict, though I can't see how. Any ideas?

Re: Updating from Basic to Premium
you can only upgrade one computer
to upgrade the second computer you need to pay for it again as it will register as a pirated copy on the second computer

Re: Updating from Basic to Premium
I'm not doubting that you've heard that somewhere, but I don't think that is accurate in my case. The reason I say this is two fold. One it let me get through the verifying of my serial number and two on my previous computer I did a clean install using my upgrade disk and after doing so was told that I had used up 1 of the 5 machine limit for doing upgrades with that copy.

Re: Updating from Basic to Premium
i think the problem is with the gateway oem not recognising the upgrade disk as compatible with their version and it looks like a corporate version not a retail upgrade version of vista
you will need to contact microsoft support to see if a gateway version can be upgraded with the version of the disk you have

Re: Updating from Basic to Premium
Calling Microsoft is not really an option for me, I refuse to pay their prices for support since the 3-month free support period for my upgrade disk has expired. I think that the second computer thing is the main issue based on replies both here and in another forum. I have since ordered anytime upgrade from my computer for $70. Just waiting for the activation disk to come in the mail. Gateway told me that should work and if it doesn't it becomes a Microsoft support issue and I can then hound them for the solution. If I'd have known my graphics card from my previous pc and the ram chip wouldn't fit on my new computer due to being obsolete I'd have paid a little more and gotten a pc w/ premium on it. Lesson learned. Thanks everyone for your help and I'll make sure to repost once I get things taken care of.

Re: Updating from Basic to Premium
Well, good news and bad news... The bad news is after I bought the $70 upgrade I got to spend countless hours on the phone w/ Microsoft technical support who insisted I stay on the phone with them during the upgrade process while they asked me what I did for a living, how the weather was, what I did for fun. They kept trying different things, uninstalling programs, selective start-up, etc... They then got Gateway on the phone who once again was no help. After the 3rd or 4th attempt to upgrade, the Microsoft rep said the only thing that would work was a clean install. So that is what I did. Luckily the Gateway guy did have me create an application and driver recovery disk, and I had my personal files, install programs, and bookmarks on my second hard drive. So anyways, my computer is now running Vista Home Premium again and I am restoring things back to the way I had them. And with the retail purchase of Vista you get to install it up to 5 times and it can be more than one machine. By the way, the anytime upgrade is a farce, you later have to pay $200 the Microsoft rep told me. Thanks again everyone for your help.
