Vista/XP files wizard help;
I have XP Pro in C:\
I've just installed Vista Home Premium in D:\ From within XP, I created a 490,00 .dat files and settings backup of XP, now I need to transfer it to Vista. Has anyone accomplish this yet??

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
I would have used Windows easy transfer to save the files and settings.
I'm not sure what you have there. Is it a backup file?

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
""Windows easy transfer"" ??
I used the Files and settings wizard inside of XP Pro, and It created a half-meg .dat file that I have saved on a different partition. What do you suggest doing now??

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
dai:
I kind of knew that was to good to be true. I installed the windows transfer msi (as told) to my XP using the option transfer to local ext hard-drive and it was successful and gave me a password to write down. I booted over to Vista (it runs on a different HD on active partition D:\) and ran the Windows easy transfer msi, installed and got this error: ""Windows was found on multi drives and C:\ is not active. This is currently not a supported scenario."" That's it, I had to "OK" out to exit, didn't work?? Any ideas....??

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
normally the active partition is C,you can change the drive letters around but this leads to more problems and i am not very knowledgable on this

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
Yep,
As per the first post, all I want to do is tranfer (transfer) my favorite files and settings from C:\ (XP) to the newly installed Vista HD that's shown as D:\ If anyone has more ideas, I'll try it.

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
if you have seperate h/d's for c and d
if you disconnect c and reboot windows should assign c to the drive in there and when you reconnect assign d to the one you reconnect you will probably have to run fixboot from the recovery console to get back in and the other problem will be everything installed on the original D,the path will point to d when now it is on c wait for some more replies from members with more knowledge on the subject.i have pm'd one that may know to have a look just had a reply if the c and d are seperate drives make c active in disk manager

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
dai ??
Question that I'm sure you can explain but I'd like to have a better understanding. The easy transfer wizard doesn't ask where to store it's files and doesn't ask where to restore from ---- so if I disconnect the XP drive, what since is there running easy transfer in Vista as it will not find any XP file settings on a disconnected drive!!! The easy transfer wizard created a ton of files in the XP C:\ drive -- Files like .src .RDO and folders like SxsAsm10 and many - many more. How is Easy transfer wizard going to find any XP created files inside of vista?? This easy transfer wizard just makes lot's of files at the root of C:\ , there must be a better method, let's forget this application, it wants us to buy an expensive transfer cable anyway, all I want to do is go from C:\ to D:\ Surely, someone has something better and free?

Re: Vista/XP files wizard help;
Well, I went thru all of the WD software downloads and can't find anything to transfer from old to new OSes.
Any other thoughts...?
