How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

This is my first time posting, so please forgive me if not in right place. I have an emachine T5082, with 2 gig RAM, a 512 video card, after disabling integrated video/ My Windows Vista Experience Index is 4.2, based on the following lowest number Processor: Calculations per second.

If I change the processor to a Duo Core 2, would that increase this number, and if so, how do I do it (cost, type etc).

If there is another way to lift this number, can someone tell me how. The two other low numbers (in the 4.x range) are Memory: Memory operations per second (4.4); and Gaming Graphics: 3D business and gaming graphics performance. )4.4)

Any help greatly appreciated!

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

We really need to know more information about the components inside. It will depend on what motherboard you have in your computer to determine if you can upgrade or not.

Download everest and post what motherboard, manufacturer, BIOS edition and any other relevant information first please.

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

Unfortunately your motherboard is not compatible with the Core 2 Duo line of processors. It is compatable with the pentium 4 extreme edition of processors, but they are much more expensive, and then the bottleneck will be the motherboard as the CPU will be more power than it can run.

If you can find a higher speed P4 w/ht it would make only a small difference. Honestly at this stage with an old motherboard chipset, you might want to think towards replacement.

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

Can you recommend a motherboard/cpu combo that would fit this case? And upon upgrading, will it increase the index numbers significantly?

I have met over two hundred people with NEWER machines than mine, and no one seems to have over 4.3 Index. Is it due to my limited number of contacts or is seeking 4.7 or better unrealistic?

Thanks!

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

I wouldn't say it's unrealistic, but it's going to cost you more than a new processor to get there. You might upgrade the processor, but then you're going to only get a 4.4 as the memory and graphics max out... you upgrade that and you hit another bottleneck, etc etc.

I wouldn't put so much emphasis on the WEI, if you've got no problems running what you need to run, ignore it. You don't have the aero glass, and for an 'older' computer it looks like it runs better than most computers of that class.

My pd gets a 4.7 and they are compatable with that chipset (same as mine)

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

Thanks to both of you for your input. I may have given you the wrong impression. My T5082 DOES give me the Aero Effect, and translucent edges. I love the machine, but those numbers just seem to call out to me

Just knowing that there is a higher number attainable has kept me focused on achieving them. Thanks Again.

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

Hi Daniel, I get 5.7 for my machine. Don't go on that though, it is fairly rough guide. If you machine works for you and does what you want, then don't waste your money yet. There is a few new developments in the pipeline that mean that you will get a very decent dual core or quad core with greater L2 memory and FSB than now. Also don't forget it will include a new OS in most cases as you probably have OEM.

Considered overclocking?

Re: How to change from Pentium 4 to Duo Core

As stated the only cpu atm that can get the full 5.9 is an overclocked quad core.

By the way these scores can be artificially generated by modifying certain files.http://www.petri.co.il/artificially_raise_wei.htm
