Adding 2k3 DC to a 2K Domain
Hi all. New to the forums.
I've run into some trouble setting up a new 2k3 Domain controller. Here are the variables. New Dell Small Business Server 2k3 Old 2k Domain Controller 2k Domain I'm trying to get this new server on the network as the new primary domain controller, whilst keeping the the 2k as the BDC. Although the 2k3 machine says it's a DC and on the Domain I see little evidence of this. It does not register in the 2k Active Directory and no Domain Objects show in AD either. Also when I log on I don't have an option to log into the domain, only locally. But when I look at it's network identification it shows as being part of the domain. I'm so lost. I've done a fair amount of reading on this but I haven't gotten anywhere. I started first by going through the initial set up process on the new 2k3 server, it asked me domain and networking info, I did this before I ran forestprep and domain prep on the old server. I'm worried I somehow isolated this new server in it's own domain that just happens to be named the same as the one I was trying to join it to. Does anyone have any ideas? |

Re: Adding 2k3 DC to a 2K Domain
First mistake is adding SBS to an existing domain and second could be adding a second server to the SBS domain. SBS was specifically designed NOT to work with other servers on the domain. My guess is that's what's causing your issues. If you want to test your SBS box to see if it's acting as the DC, then unplug the other server from the network see what happens. I'm not sure if you've attempted to migrate the machine accounts from the old to the new, or if you migrated your user accounts, but without those, you're going to be banging your head against a rock.

Re: Adding 2k3 DC to a 2K Domain
That makes sense, I've never set up SBS before. So you're telling me that in order for this to work I need to first migrate all of the accounts and objects to the new 2k3 server and then disable the 2k server? SBS won't work with other domain controllers? Or it won't work with pre-existing domain controllers?

Re: Adding 2k3 DC to a 2K Domain
It was specifically designed to function as a single server on a network that has no more than 75 users.

Re: Adding 2k3 DC to a 2K Domain
Thank you so much, you really saved my a*s.
I'm setting up this DC as a test to see if I get a new and way better job. If anyone else has had a problem with this, it's all detailed in the article via microsoft. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884453 |
