Faulty Router?

I just upgraded to Verizon FiOS and i am using the router that came with the installation. It is a Actiontec MI424-WR model router. The problem is, i can't encrypt the signal with WEP, otherwise when i connect, the signal is limited and i cannot access the internet. Even once WEP encryption is off, my connection is no strong. The signal is excellent and the laptop mere 10 feet from the router, but the signal comes and goes, frequently leaving me int the middle of things. The internet just randomly dissappears and i cannot connect. Can anyone help me fix the signal and let me encrypt WEP.
