desktop wallpaper blank out

Rather stupid right? Try staring at the same thing for over four months even when changing colors.
I tried to use someone's usb stick and it was having such a hard time loading the information that it froze up and I forced it to close with ctrl+alt+delete. Of course while its closing it starts working but as soon as I bring windows back up its blank.
I look in the Display properties Desktop and Background isn't even lite up with blue. It gives me no option to select anything what so ever. I tried going a back way and picking a graphic and right clicking it and selecting "set as background" and it just doesn't do anything. Short of backing up all of my files and reinstalling I'm not sure what to do.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
