OS: 2003 server SP3 and XP professional SP2

i am in a vo-tech school and we have our servers on virtual machines and i cant seem to connect i checked the ip adress i checked the hub and cables i even went back and did every thing agian and i still have the same problem though it is giving out ip adresses promt is saying it is in my domain yet it is also saying that it cant connect.
