OS: Windows XP SP2
|
I seem to be unable to install windows 2000 server edition on my computer. Its a laptop which meets all the minimum requirements for windows 2000.
I currently run windows XP sp2. I boot the computer off the windows 2000 server CD and enter the installation. It runs throught the dos section of the installation fine. I format the C drive using NTFS (windows xp is installed on C drive) and then I install windows 2000 server on the C drive. So ofcourse the windows xp is completely removed, and that is what i want. Then the computer restarts and i get the windows 2000 logo, the one you get before you go into the GUI mode of the installation. However this is where it hangs/freezes. I see the logo/splashscreen, and the little bar that moves from left to right indicating that it is loading. And then all of a sudden it freezes. And just remains like that. Basically my computer is left completely unusable. Windows 2000 is not fully installed, and there is no other operating system. I have tried the installation several times. Ive used a windows 2000 server CD which seems to work perfectly on another computer Ive tried it on. And Ive also tried installing using just the i386 files obtained from 3 other sources. So basically thats 4 different windows 2000 server edition CDs that have failed. Obviously the problem lies with my computer. I am completely clueless as to what should be done. I have reverted back to windows xp for now just so i can check email and stuff on my computer. But I really need to install windows 2000 server edition. Any help would be appreciated. Gary |

Gary,
I personally would not try and run any kind of server OS on a laptop. The laptop's hardware was configured for the OS it came with. Like you said yourself. "The problem lies within the laptop." I would either purchase or build a server and install the server 2000 OS on that because like you said it will work on another computer. Is there a reason why you want to try and have a laptop as a server? Mark |
