Win 2003 + Win XP Dual Boot Issue
hello everyone,
i had been running 2 win 2003 server OS-s on the same computer, same 3-partitioned hdd til 3 weeks ago, no pbs at all, one OS on C:, the other on D: however, i then decided to replace one win 2003 with win XP, since several progs definitely required XP rather than 2003 server. so i formated C: and installed win xp PRO Corporate, leaving D: (with its win 2003 server on it) untouched. XP has since been running flawlessly, though big surprise - win 2003 on D: will not boot any longer, that is, i see the dual boot screen, but if i go for win 2003, it will try to boot up, but at the precise moment when the moving win2003 logo (that moving bar from left to right) should show up, the PC reboots, leaving me no option other than boot in win XP. i learnt somewhere that one should install 2 different win OS-s from old to new, i.e. win xp FIRST and win 2003 AFTER, while i did exactly the opposite. is that it? or am i missing something else here? any ideas greatly appreciarted |

You hit the nail on the head / you must install the oldest product first then the youngest release last
the minute you removed the "boss" OS the subordinate is going to fall on its face because it was the "boss" version that had the info to conduct the dual boot. hope this helps regards: joe

What programs require windows XP?
I've been running windows 2003 as my sole OS since Dec 2002, I can think of maybe 5 or 6 programs that REQUIRE windows Xp or lower. Almost all of them are virus scanners or programs that have a 'server' version out as well. If you are dual booting just for a virus scanner, that would be silly.

Well,
Thanks a lot guys, you have actually confirmed my suspicions about that old-to-new OS installation order :) so that leaves me no alternative that actually reinstalling win 2003 on D:, as i guess just repairing current one would be to no avail :(( appreciate ur answers |

Actually, you could try doing a Repair on the priviously installed copy of 2k3.
I *THINK* the repair option on the installer will be able to solve the problem, but it depends on a few things that I'm not quite sure of.
