Re: setup a network on windows server 2003

Hi!!!

How did you ADD the computer (client) to the DOMAIN?

Are you using Active Directory on your DC?

Are you using DNS on your DC?

Are you using DHCP? If so, are you using the router for DHCP or the server?

What is your logical network setup? IP ADDRESS of both the server and workstation(s) including subnets.

What type of router are you using? Make, model, and firmware version, please.

What is your client operating system?

Is your Windows Server 2003 really 2003 or is it R2?

Thanks!

Re: setup a network on windows server 2003

I’m very sorry; I did not see your answer inside the quoted text from me. I thought you just posted what I wrote and that was it.

Okay, so let’s recap what you have going on:
  1. You have a Windows Server 2003 (not an R2) that runs Active Directory (AD) and DNS. You are not using DHCP.
  2. You are attempting to connect a Windows Vista Ultimate client to the domain; you setup the domain account for the Vista client manually.
  3. You do not have a router installed on your network or at least on this segment of the network.
I have absolutely no idea about your network environment. You will have to tell me what your network settings currently are and the information I will need is:

What is your server’s IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS settings?

What is your clients IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS settings?

Can either of these computers connect to the internet? If so, you most likely have router some where on your network that is allowing them both to get online (assuming both are accessing the internet. I need to know the configuration of your router – IP and subnet on the inside of your network.

Your server should have a STATIC IP address assigned to it!

You stated you are not using DHCP, but the screenshot you posted shows that your PC is getting a DHCP address from somewhere or is at least configured to obtain a DHCP assigned address.

Where does it get it from? Since this appears to be your server’s network configuration settings, you must set it to a STATIC address. It should point to itself for DNS.

Does your server’s DNS work correctly? Can you ping a WWW site and get the name resolved on your server?

Can you ping your server from the VISTA client? And can you ping it by the server’s NAME and not just the IP address?

You will have to delete the computer object that you manually created in your domain for the VISTA workstation.

It is not impossible to setup a computer account manually on AD, but it is not recommended that you do it this way. The best way to add a client to the domain is:
  1. Log into the client
  2. Go to your SYSTEM PROPERTIES
  3. COMPUTER NAME tab
  4. Click on the CHANGE button
  5. Under MEMBER of select DOMAIN
  6. Enter the name you gave your DOMAIN when you set it up
  7. Click on OK
  8. You should receive a prompt from the DC asking for the credentials of someone who has rights on the domain to add this computer to the domain. Enter your credentials.
This should go smoothly if you have your computer’s network settings setup correctly, if you have the domain name correctly, if DNS is working correctly, and you have supplied the correct credentials for the domain to add this system to the domain.

If an error occurs then something from the above paragraph is not setup correctly. Most common are the incorrect name of the domain was entered; DNS is not working correctly on the LAN side, or you supplied the wrong credentials.

Recap of all of this:
  1. STATIC IP for Server
  2. Server's DNS should be set to itself 127.0.0.1
  3. STATIC IP for VISTA workstation
  4. Vista workstation’s DNS configuration should point to the server’s address
  5. Delete the VISTA computer object in AD that you manually created
  6. See if you can PING the server by NAME to ensure DNS is working
  7. Use the VISTA client to add the computer to the domain following the steps that were provided.

Give me your answers to all of the questions, fill me on the changes you have made, and any results.

Thanks!

Re: setup a network on windows server 2003

we will make a network sever/clients
my problem How can establish it ?
What is your server’s IP address, subnet, gateway and DNS settings?

What is your clients IP address, subnet, gateway, and DNS settings?

( I do not know what mean IP address & DNS address ?? )
How can set them ... ? or they are static( I can put them from my self)
Is it must server’s IP address match DNS ?
we will use a router ..
Is it needing to IP router ?
I know those steps .........
Log into the client
Go to your SYSTEM PROPERTIES
COMPUTER NAME tab
Click on the CHANGE button
Under MEMBER of select DOMAIN
Enter the name you gave your DOMAIN when you set it up
Click on OK
You should receive a prompt from the DC asking for the credentials of someone who has rights on the domain to add this computer to the domain. Enter your credentials.
but i do not know what are settings in client to connect with server
on same local area network ?????

Re: setup a network on windows server 2003

Hi and please don't misunderstand what I am about to say, but....

What you really need to do is get yourself some good guides on installing and configuring Windows Servers, managing servers, DNS, Networking, and Active Directory.

I'm going to point you to a very good resource for Windows Server 2003. There are numerous articles covering all the information that you need to get a domain setup and running.

http://www.petri.co.il/searchform?q=WIndows+Server+2003

Once again, I'm not trying to be impolite, but based on the skill level that you have shown me in your responses, you need to learn the basics before taking on the advanced portions of your current ventures.

Thank you and I'm sorry, but I cannot help you any further. If and when you decide to drill down thru some of the technologies you are attempting to install and manage; grasp a decent understanding of the basics and need help with some of the "more advanced" features or run into problems with any of it, feel free to contact me and I will gladly help.

Thanks!

Re: setup a network on windows server 2003

Oh no, no reason to be sorry. I just think you should read up on what you are venturing into.

If you need help on parts you do not understand, I will be MORE THAN HAPPY to help you.

Here is how to set a static IP:

http://www.tech-faq.com/how-do-i-set...-windows.shtml

Yes, the client's DNS should have the IP address of the server - at a minimum it should be the primary DNS IP; you may use a secondary DNS for failover such as your providers DNS in the second entry field.

So, you have to set the server's IP address as instructed in the link provided. However, when you enter the DNS IP, it should be 127.0.0.1 so that the server pulls from it's own DNS. Once again, you can setup a secondary DNS using another source.

Thanks!
