I manage a 2003 SBS server that is used for several very simple tasks. Primary functions are 3 shares, and an Advantage database. There's also a VPN server and DNS server. DHCP is handled by our router.
We're switching to new (and different) server hardware and upgrading to 2008 SBS (simply because we got it for free from a client). The path I'm considering is migrating 2003 to the new server than upgrading to 2008. What I'm most interested in is transferring all of our client computers and users to the new server seamlessly so I can just "drop in" the new server. I can copy and recreate the shares and set up the advantage database in about 15 minutes, so my migratory needs are quite simple. Can I restore a system state backup to the new machine to accomplish this? |

Re: best path for very simple 2003 SBS migration?
i have a feeling thatthe system state doesnt work very well, it was very problematic when i tried to migrate ours, it seems theres not any easy way to do the migration except the 'swing migration' but you have to pay for software to do that.
in the end when i did mine i had to basically start with a completly new server, and set it up from scratch because all the methods i looked into were far too complex or simply did not work... let us know if you find a good migration method |

Re: best path for very simple 2003 SBS migration?
My reading is pointing in that direction. I'd like to do the system state restore still to see what happens, but I don't think I'll get to. Like I said, the server is very simply set up. I'd really just like to find a way of setting up each client individually.
Any thoughts? |
