Terminal Services & Remote Routing Access

Hi,

1. Is it possible to run two different windows servers with each having its on Terminal Services running in Application Server mode while having both these two servers connected to one Domain Controller(3rd server acting as domain controller) ?

2. Is it possible to have each Server running it's on Routing & Routing Dial Access to have outside users VPN into that individual server and access its application ?

Thanks

Re: Terminal Services & Remote Routing Access

Yes to all of it. You can run Routing and Remote Access on the DC also.

Re: Terminal Services & Remote Routing Access

that is great but here is my dilema , let me know if you can help :

A little background of my current config .. we're a small company and we currently have ONE Server running SBS2003/SQL2000 std. Our server basically is our Domain Controller, File server,SQL Host server and of course its connected to a regular DSL line to provide internet to all the workstation in our office and I have routing & remote access running on it as well for me to connect from home and check things sometimes if needed. Our business is growing therefor we gonna have other office locations and I'm gonna need to host more SQL DB's and have clients connect to our main office via VPN and RDP.

My plan is to purchase a new server which will be running Windows 2008 Server Std edition & SQL 2008 Std edition which will host the old DB's + the new ones for the new offices and I will have the 2008 server join the sbs2003 domain since. here are my questions , so please let me know if any of this is possible:

1. Is it possible to have a dedicated T-1 connection that will be used only for the 2008 server and for its terminal-S clients while keeping the old DSL internet connection for the SBS2003 domain controller and for the in-office workstation use .. keeping in mind that in-office workstation will still need to access the 2008 server for SQL but when they browse the internet it uses the old DSL line .. in other words the T-1 connection should only be used for the Terminal services clients aka remote users to vpn and rdp directly into the 2008 machine to access SQL which is all they need.

2. Is it possible to have two (Routing & Remote access servers) running at the same time in one domain on two different servers ? example I have routing&remote access already running on my SBS2003 for me to vpn and manage the server remotely ... but I want to run the routing & remote access server on the new 2008 machine as well so it will be used for our outside clients through the T-1 line without the need to go through the domain controllers (SBS2003) remote access server first .. is this possible ?

appreciate the help .. I can explain more or even layout the ip's and everything if the above is confusing.

Thanks
lee

Re: Terminal Services & Remote Routing Access

You can run a separate subnet for the T1 on a new NIC on the server and assign it to Routing and Remote access. The advantage of a T1 over DSL will be the higher upload speed. This will also save you the expense of setting up a router to Multi-Home two internet feeds.

I have not had the pleasure of working with 2008 yet, so if something has changed from 2003, I'm sure someone will add to this post. But you can certainly run RRA on multiple servers in the same domain. They will have different target IP addresses and host names. And RRA will only hit the DC for authentication, so this will not impact DC performance.
