Remote Desktop only connects with IP
When trying to connect to one of my Servers here at work I can only connect by typing in the server IP address and not the server name.
Finding this very irritating as I've got 50 end users trying to access it and they always have to type in the IP instead of the server name ![]() Any suggestions?! Thanks! |

Re: Remote Desktop only connects with IP
Well, it could be a number of things, first, is the server you are trying to connect to a DNS server? Are you running Active Directory? What OS is on the server and the clients? Are you using WINS server? (older systems) On your client machines, you need to go into TCP\IP properties and set up your primary and secondary DNS servers and default gateway. They may be pointing to your ISP's IP address and that could cause the problem you are having. I am assuming that your machines are in a Domain. The possible reason you can connect using the IP address instead of the name is there is no DNS resolution. Need more info.

Re: Remote Desktop only connects with IP
Can you let me know the architecture of your network. If your server is configured to access from Public access "internet", there must have an DNS configuration as well as you need to open the ports (default 3389 ) from your firewall. According to your problem, seems some DNS related issue.
