Question Extended partition new size not shown in My Computer Windows Server 2003 SP2

Hello everyone

I have recently expanded a RAID array in a HP Proliant server running Windows Server 2003 SP2. The unallocated space was detected OK in the HP Array Configuration utility and I expanded the array to the required size. I then used diskpart to extend volume 3 on disk 0, and this extension is shown in Disk Management. However, when I checked My Computer the original partition size was still shown. Rebooting the server made no difference.

I have searched the internet and came across the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832316 knowledgebase article which seems to imply that this issue was resolved in Windows Server 2003 SP1. How come I have the problem on a 2003 server with SP2 installed?

I've looked into the diskpart "extend filesystem" command mentioned in the article, however this command is not recognised by either the version of diskpart which was already present of the server or another version I downloaded from Microsoft. Does anyone have a link to a version of diskpart which will recognise this command?

I would be grateful if someone could provide a solution ASAP please as a SQL database administrator colleague needs the extra space I am trying to create for SQL backup files.

Thanks!

diskpart has this problem sometimes, moreover, it cannot see the result intuitionisticly. If the unallocated space is in the front, you cannot extend the partition, too. Rather than under the risk of data loss, I like to use easeus partition master, which is cost-effective. The most important, it is safe and can extend the ntfs partition without reboot. you may check http://www.partition-tool.com/easeus...out-reboot.htm

Re: Extended partition new size not shown in My Computer Windows Server 2003 SP2

Hi Longtail

It turns out the problem is to do with the version of diskpart being used. I was using version 1.0.3.1 as this is the version stored in the support folders of our servers. It turns out that Service Pack 2 for Windows Server 2003 places version 5.2.3790.3959 of diskpart in Windows\System32, and this is the version I should have been using to extend the partition. It is this version that supports the "extend filesystem" command.

diskpart can help you extend a volume, but there is a shortage that you cannot expand the partition if there is no unallocated space behind it. That is to say, before using diskpart to expand the partition, you have to delete the behind partition. a professional partitioning tool may make the job easier, how to resize and expand server
