what are Roles in w2k8?

hello everyone,

I am new to w2k8. In server manager i see that under Roles Summary, I have "Roles: 0 of of 17 installed".

I don't know what Roles are. How can i use them, and what can Roles do?

I done some research, for instance, this one

Active Directory roles
Active Directory roles is expanded with identity, certificate, and rights management services. Active Directory, until Windows Server 2003, allowed network administrators to centrally manage connected computers, to set policies for groups of users, and to centrally deploy new applications to multiple computers.

Can someone tell me what your experience with Roles are? And if possible, can you name me some neat Roles in W2k8.

Roles are the different functions that the server can perform.
