joining domain
Hello all
im trying to add a windows xp client to windows 2000 domain .. but im getting a message stating that the domain name cannot be found. i suspect it might be a dns issue. i have configured the windows 2000 server to be a domain controller, have run the dns setup wizard and then set up a dhcp server. would i need to set up dns host entries for each client i am trying to add to the domain? |

Re: joining domain
change the TCP-ip settings for dns on both the server and the client to only be the ip address of the domain controler.
Both computers should have that internal ip of the DC, there should be no external / isp dns on any computer on your network. EVER Your dns server knows how to find the internet, it does not need help |

Re: joining domain
Actually you need to create DNS forwards in your DNS configuration on the server. That tells DNS to resolve what it can (machines that are correctly configured per Bilbus), and what it can't it forwards to your ISP's DNS servers.

Re: joining domain
Not true, it can resolve dns names just fine via root hints. that is the default.
You can create fowards if you want to use a set of external dns servers, but it is not required. It will work jsut fine without fowards. |

Re: joining domain
have you setup AD yet?
If no then thats all you need to do. Along with setting your DC's tcp-ip settings for dns server to it self, and having no external dns servers in any of your dc, servers, or workstations |
