Correct IP Address on Windows NT Server - Please Help!
New member here and please bare with me because I may not provide all of the details about this question but please ask me if you have any additional questions.
I have 3 servers that are Windows Based NT server with about 30 clients. I was messing around in the Internet Properties TCP/IP Settings for the LAN and by mistake, I clicked on "Obtain an IP Address Automatically" and without thinking clicked on "OK" and my saved IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Preferred DNS Server & Alternate DNS Server were GONE! ![]() I can't figure out and get the correct IP Address settings. I can see the internet connection coming in to the LAN but I am getting error's with duplicate IP's and Duplicate Default Gateway's. I can get into DHCP under "Manage My Server" but the IP Address seems to be the one I have entered and I do not know which IP address is correct and which one is wrong. The 1st IP address, what the Cisco router uses is 192.168.16.1 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway 192.168.16.1 My question is how can I find the correct information for the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Preferred DNS Server & Alternate DNS Server for the 3 servers? Please ask me any questions that you have. I am fairly new to this stuff and probably didn't provide all the information you need. Thank you in advance! ![]() Alex Last edited by alexinsandiego; 11-03-2008 at 12:17 AM. Reason: Spelling |

Re: Correct IP Address on Windows NT Server
Ok since no one has replied I will try and help you. Have you changed the settings on all 3 servers? What exact os are the servers running? Are you using 1 or 2 nics per server? most servers have two nics and you could be configuring the wrong nic or configuring them both when your Lan configuration only uses the one. In the mean time its going to require elimination so Firstly I would open up a command prompt on all three servers as well as a few client machines and type in ipconfig /all, this will tell you what the current settings ares o make note of them then i would go to a local clients machine and bring up properties on the Local area connection page this will give you an idea of the dhcp server and default gateway as long as one of your clients is configured with a static ip address. You could also log onto the router and see what ports are forwarded to where and check for static routes. For example if port 25 is forwarded to an ip address then that ip address is your mail servers ip address. Run a ip scanner like angry ip or the dude. the dude will give you lots of info about your network and tends to pick up ips better than angry ip. This will give an idea of what ip's are free? Under dhcp in your servers if you expand scope and look under scope options it may tell you your default gateway and dhcp ip address. also check under reservations and see what ip;s are reserved. Hope this helps

Re: Correct IP Address on Windows NT Server
Bremner,
Let me say thank you very much for the response. I really appreciate it. I just wanted to let you know that I had to get our IT guy in the office and he was able to fix the issue. Let me try to explain it here just in case someone else comes across the same issue. My experience with these computer issues is that sometimes issues can become so COMPLEX and often it could be 100 different things that went wrong. Anyways, let me try to explain. 1st, We have 3 switches, or port switches that all of the patch cables go out to all of clients through. He found that one of these appeared to be bad and that was what the main server was going through so I could see the signal but it wasn't going out to any of the clients. He replaced this. 2nd, We did a restart last week on the 3 servers and apparently some how an old DHCP was activated with a bunch of old IP's from an old office and it started sending these bad IP's out to the clients and stopped everyone from picking up a Internet connection or even being able to see the network. He deactivated that and the problem was fixed. Anyways, thank you for the feedback and suggestions. I hope my info will help someone else if they have a similar issues!
