[SOLVED] Strange remote desktop issue
Okaaay.. HALP!
I've just installed winserv 03 on my 4u server, and admittedly, when it comes to server OS's i'm a complete newb. I enabled remote desktop connections, and connected myself from my Vista 64bit workstation. Before i did this i was running programs on the computer. it is still outside of its intended location with a monitor and kb for setting it up, and i had nero running, ultimate defrag and winrar. I login via my vista pc, login using Administrator and the same password as i used to login on the pc itself (via kb attached) and i get a different desktop, no desktop image (despite being set in the properties of the saved rdp file on the vistapc) & no running programs, despite there being running programs on the screen. It's like i'm logging into Administrator(2) or something. So i'm really stuck. This didn't happen when i logged into my previous server running winxp. If there was a monitor attached, it would goto the welcome screen when i rdp'd to it. Any ideas? Cheers in advance

Re: Strange remote desktop issue
Hi,
If you login remotely to Windows Server 2003 you get a terminal services session. Within this "Administrator(2)" login you can connect to your console session: Right Click the Task Bar > Task Manager > Users Tab > Right click the Administrator user and select Connect. You can also access the console session by running Remote Desktop from run: mstsc.exe /v:<IP Address or FQDN of Server> /console Dan. |

Excellent!~
Looks like i came to the exact right place to resolve my issue. Further proven by it being solved by the first reply! ![]() One more thing however: I like to log-in to remotedesktop from a Shortcut with the username already entered. Can i simply Create a .bat file from this "mstsc.exe /v:<IP Address or FQDN of Server> /console" And from what i saw in the help dialogue for mstsc the switch was /Admin instead of /Console, and it seems to need a port. Wouldn't connect without it :S. And lastly, would i really even need to create a batch file? if the current shortcut that logs me into "Administrator(2)"gets me there, and allows me access to all the things installed on "Administrator", would it matter? or does Administrator(2) hold limited ownership? I noted that i couldn't set a wallpaper, or choose from anymore than 3 screensavers ![]() Quote:

Re: Strange remote desktop issue
Hi,
Administrator(2) holds the same ownership/security level as an administrator logged onto the physical server itself. The reason you couldnt set a wallpaper is because you are in a remote desktop session and you have (by default) no Desktop Background, No Contents of any Windows while dragging and no menu and window and window animation. This can be changed in the options of MSTSC The easiest way to create a remote desktop is through a shortcut to the mstsc.exe executable, however, the same switches can also be used in a batch file (.bat) The command/shortcut target would probably be something like: mstsc.exe /v:<IP Address or FQDN of Server>:3389 /admin (/console for xp) When you run this shortcut then it should ask you for credentials in a Windows style popup where you can enter a username and password, select the 'Save this Password' option (not very secure though!). Then, in theory each and everytime you run that shortcut it should automatically connect. Of course, If you had multiple servers you want to connect to each time I would suggest that you use the Remote Desktop Snapin for Microsoft Management Console. Dan. |
