Help ! Newbie setup help needed ;(
Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me. My company has ran on a UNIX computer for over 20 years. We have just purchased a new computer running Windows Server 2003. We are not using Terminal Services. I need to allow users to sign on and then immediately run the application program. How do I do this ? I am familiar with Win PC's but not the Server software, so I am totally lost ![]() Any help will be MOST appreicated .... |

Re: Help ! Newbie setup help needed ;(
You want users logging directly into the application server? With Windows, unless it's a web based application, you may not get around using terminal services. RDP uses TS. Citrix or an equivalent will publish the application you need in several ways, but again, you need TS licenses, and citrix licenses.
How many users do you have trying to access these applications? and is this over a LAN or WAN?

Re: Help ! Newbie setup help needed ;(
I will have a total of 18-20 users on a LAN. We are not using the application server. The application software distributor told me to run in client/server mode. I could put an icon on the users desktops and use a logon script to immediately bring up the application software. (Actually, the logon program for the application programs). It's an accounting package written in COBOL they are accessing, if that helps...
If I were trying this on a regular PC, I would just have a .bat I ran from the icon. But I am not sure how to set it with a server environment. I know it would be easier with TS and RDU and the reason we did not do that is totally economic. We are a very small company and I purchased 20 CALS for Server 2003. I can't afford 20 more TS licenses, and the application people said it was more convenient with TS but not necessary. (Again they said run in simple client/server mode). I am just totally unfamiliar with Windows server ![]() Any suggestions ? Thanks!! Last edited by fireflies; 09-10-2008 at 05:59 AM. |

Re: Help ! Newbie setup help needed ;(
What I would do is create a logon script that runs that contains the command you need executed and then add that to each users profile. This all assumes that you're running it as a domain. If you are, then you'll need to create the bat file that you need run and put it in the NETLOGON directory share that's on the server. You could call it something like LOGON.BAT or whatever you want. Then you go to the user profile for each user and add LOGON.BAT (or whatever you named it) to the LOGON SCRIPT section under the PROFILE tab. The next time they log in, they should also run that script. You can create custom logon scripts for each user (or groups of users) should you be so inclined.
