network configuration between 2 PC
Hello friends,
I've 1 desktop (win XP) & a laptop (win XP). I want to make the laptop a domain (installing 2003 server) & the desktop will be the member of that domain. So, what bout the network card & cable? *) Is it possible just using a cross over cable & without hub/switch? *) If not, then what's are the requirements & how can I configure? |

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
Yes, crossover cable will work. Set both machines on oppossing IP's of same network subnet, like 172.16.1.1 adn 172.16.1.2 and connect with crossover. Done.

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
Hello John,
Thanks for ur reply. I m describing here what I want. In office, we've active directory based domain server configured with win 2003 professional. all pc (including laptop) are member of the domain. We are connected with LAN using a switch (of course straight through cable) & also connected with internet. Now, I want to set up the same system using 2 PC in my home(I don't have internet in home). So, my questions: 1) Is it possible to set up this system? 2) I dont have switch/hub & also need to know what kind of cable I need (with cross over cable/staright through cable)? coz crooss over need peer to peer LAN connection. I just want to know the total requirements. If u need more Q to ask me, then plz ask... Thanks in advance. |

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
That is all you need, is a crossover cable. As long as both machines are setup on same network IP/subnet then no swtich/hub is needed. Just hook one machine right into the other using the crossover cable.
If you are wanting a detailed explination of setting up a Windows 2003 AD domain, and the like, that is probably a bit involved for answering here.

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
Hi,
Yes, I want to set up Ad domain in home. So, suggest me... but is it starnge idea to u!!! I want to practice in home, increase my knowledge & implement in ofiice. Coz, direct implementation may be harm ful for office users. I dont want that any one stuck to use any office PC. So, if any problem arise in office, then I will see in home network first then I'll implement in office...hope u will understand, but why it's so curious to u - lost!!! And I've only 2 PC at home (1 desktop & 1 laptop). If any suggestion, please tell... |

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
It just is a little strange,
All the things i deploy at my work i fully test out on VMware first. I was curious as to why you wanted to have it for home use, but as its for testing reasons it makes sense now. What is it are you test-implementing? a new AD structure + Domain? |

Re: network configuration between 2 PC
VMWare is basically Virtual Machine.
I have a high spec Developer PC with a Virtual Windows 2003 Server running on it.. so i can test deploy things over the network like, Sharepoints etc etc. And when it works, i then install it on the main Server... Although imho, i would prefer a Blade Server and have everything Virtualized! |
