I work for a small non-profit. We have a client server network with approx. 10 workstations. I need to move our server to a different building (we have 3 residential homes on our campus), because the room it is in is not temperature controlled. I attempted to do this today, with no success. I plugged it in, connected the network cable, but wasn't able to access it from any of the workstations, and the internet was down accross the campus. The server serves as the gateway, and has a static IP address. Everything (via some switches and routers made to behave like switches) plugs into a central router in the building I'm moving the server from. I do not have access to that router as it is part of our ISP's "managed network security". What am I missing? I figured I could just plug it into any network cable on campus, just as I can with a workstation. Please help. It's getting awful hot in the current server room.

Re: Trying to move server to different room
Yes, it is. 255.255.255.0
I did discover, however, that the office I was trying to move the server to is not plugged into the same switch as the other offices. But all the workstations are plugged into the same router, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. A diagram is attached. I tried to move the server from one of the offices at "ABC" to one of the offices at "TLC" Should the feed to "TLC" be plugged into the switch at "ABC" rather than directly into the router? Or does it matter? The workstations at "TLC" work as it is. |

Re: Trying to move server to different room
Connectivity wise there should be no problem with moving the server to the TLC offices.
Where you might have an issue is with the gateway of the server. Because you have set a static IP and you are now using a different port on the router, you will probably have to change the servers gateway to the IP address of the other router interface. |

Re: Trying to move server to different room
Ok, so I decided to test that theory before I go lug the server and it's UPS to the other building again (it's heavy). So I pulled the network cable that the server is currently plugged into out of the switch at ABC and put it directly into the router. My theory being that I would have essentially recreated the first situation that caused problems and if everything stopped working again, that I would have my answer. I could then move the server to TLC and move the TLC feed to the switch and everything would be fine. Problem is, everything worked fine when the server was plugged into the router while at ABC. So now I'm confused. The only other difference I can see is that when I had it at TLC, it went through another small switch. But that shouldn't matter, right? I'm still not sure what I'm missing.
