Internet woes!!!

Ok Let me introduce myself, I am not a network IT professional. I have some knowledge but enough to cause trouble.
With that being said...
I was asked to change the pass word to access the wireless internet at the local Library. Not knowing the IP the router was set to there was little I could do. The librarian said that nothing is on the router so I could just reset the firm ware.
Well after I did that she remembered that the entire internet for the network is routed through it's firewall then into the main switch board. Well we now have no internet and I am very frustrated.
My question is, I know the problem is with the D-Link wifi router but i don't know how to fix it since I don;t know what it was set to before. And if I can't fix how can I move on and set it to what I want and get inter net on the network. The net work is running Server 2003 with the latest updates and has only 3 purposes -1 to back up the library software and- 2 to to run Follet software to 3 client computers and -3 the internet.

Thank you for the help in advance.
James

Oh dear... How come they asked you to change that password?
They must have some written down information regarding the wifi setup.. IP / DNS etc.

Re: Internet woes!!!

Reset the router again, then login (try 192.168.0.1 User: Admin, no password - standard D-link) and you can access the setup menus.

The reason to reset it again is that someone has probably already hijacked it. Seems like it only takes minutes these days.

Anyway, if you have the model number you can probably download the manual or directions from the manufacturer's website.

Re: Internet woes!!!

Yeah I have the manual, I just don't know what settings would cause the server and the network not to see the internet. As i stated before it was set up as a firewall for the network and sent out wireless internet for people to bring their laptops in outside of the network.

Re: Internet woes!!!

First thing, lock down the wireless access.

next, ensure that if the router was using the networks connection, that it is set to either DHCP or Static. Confirm the DNS is set if static.

Plug a laptop into the back of the dlink to ensure you can get on the internet.

From then, you may need to get on console of the server, find out what that nic settings are. The server SHOULD be set to static, but if the guy who set it up was an idiot then make sure you set it to static.

Next, if the pcs are using DHCP do the standard ipconfig /release - /renew also do arp -d

Once you get the server online, you can focus toward the workstations.
