Windows server 2003 DNS server
I have a windows server 2003 small business server. I have installed a single domain (abc.com) active directory on my internal network.
The domain abc.com has a web server at www.abc.com (web site hosted by a web host) and a pop3 server at pop.abc.com (email hosted by a mail host) My DNS server is configured to forward queries to the ISP's DNS server for names it can't resolve. My DNS server successfully resolves all external names but not external abc.com names such as www.abc.com and pop.abc.com Can anyone help? |

Re: Windows server 2003 DNS server
You domain name is the same as your web site name?
If this is the case you need to add a couple of records to your forward lookup zone. I need some more info to help you with this issue. who is the web/email hosting company? Is you email hosted on site or with a hosting company? Let me know I have a good Idea of what needs to be done here. |

Re: Windows server 2003 DNS server
my domain name is abc.com and its on a 192.168.1.0/24 internal network, the website is hosted by a hosting company on their web server at 202.x.x.x public IP address. The email is also hosted by the same hosting company on their pop server at a 202.x.x.x public IP address.
My internal DNS server is configured to forward queries to the ISP's DNS for names not present in its forward lookup zone. It successfully resolves all the names in the world but external abc.com names. |

Re: Windows server 2003 DNS server
Because your domain name is the same as your website you need to add the following DNS entries.
POP with the ip address of your email server listed above. SMTP WWW Try adding those to DNS with the appropriate IP addys. Give that a try and see if that works. |

Re: Windows server 2003 DNS server
No. They need to be A records since you are using a POP protocol with a server not on site. The IP values need to point to the address of your email server.
Which hosting company are you using for website and email hosting. I ask because I have the same topology at work. My web and email is hosted as Godaddy. Just like you my servers domain name is the same as my web site name. This is where the POP, SMTP, WWW A records come into play because of the common name and the way windows thinks ABC.com should be handled. Last edited by XtabbedoutX; 04-28-2008 at 05:23 AM. |
