Need Bit Of Help With New Install Server03 & Vpn Question

Hey guys. Im after a bit of help and guidance. I am very new to server 2003. I have just bought and installed small business server 2003. The plan is to have 2 xp pro work stations on the local network and 3 laptops used by my workers interstate accessing a multi-user quickbooks company file via vpn.

I followed the initial setup for the server, which has 2 network cards. One card is configured for the local network, and the other for internet access. At this point I have the workstations on the domain logging in etc – but they have no network access. The server however, does. Would the workstations need to be configured with my providers DNS, or the servers?

I’m not sure where I’ve gone wrong… I found an article on Microsoft where it explains that the ‘internet’ network card needs to be configured in tcp/ip with my providers details, but this does not make sense to me. Surly the internet adaptors IP, subnet and gateway needs to match my local network adaptor in some way, whilst the preferred DNS servers are set to my providers.

I do have a static IP as well. Any help/suggestions with the above would be really great.

Also, in regards to setting up the VPN – as the company file is currently a good 6 meg in size, how will the laptops perform speed wise as where we are, the max broadband speed here is 1024 down, 256 up. Should I look into setting up something else?

I really appreciate your time, thanks heaps.

The clients need to look at the server for name resolution.

As for the VPN you will need to trial and error this. See how the laptops preform over VPN and adjust the "Experience" on the RDC to allow for better bandwidth usage.

Re: Need Bit Of Help With New Install Server03 & Vpn Question

Ok, after finding my adsl modem was shot, I replaced it, then re-loaded server03 again for a clean slate – im still having the same issues. Im sure its in the IP config of everything. Can you please have a look over the following config and see if you can locate an issue?
MODEM:
LAN IP: 192.168.2.254
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
SERVER:
DHCP & DNS: 192.168.16.2
Internet NIC:
192.168.2.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.2.254
dns server: 192.168.2.1

Local LAN NIC:
Ip: 192.168.16.2
SUBNET
255.255.255.0
Default gateway: None entered??
DNS: 192.168.2.1

Workstations are set on get info automatically.

The above is getting me local lan working well, but no net on the workstations. The net is working on the server still.

You need to set the default gateway on the LAN NIC.
