Win03 R2 Configuration
Hey guys we just change our win03 enterprise servers with a win03 R2 servers,
we configured it just like the configurations of our former win03 servers, a DNS,WINS,DHCP,DFS,FILE SERVER, with AD. after we did all of these last sunday, monday morning our users are saying that our Internet connection is very slow. I tried to connect our internet connection to one PC and somehow i notice a big difference in the internet speed. i havent ask our isp yet about this problem, could there be a problem with the win03 r2 configurations that could cause the internet slowness...:) im thinking that r2 is the problem or its configuration since its only new in our network.:) |

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
Check and compare(if Possible) all settings regarding the NIC(s). That is going to be the most likely cause.
The next possible issue would be the DNS is holding things up. I would like to see speed test results and ping test results to see if there are any packet loss issues as well. |

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
Yes, we did some ping test and there are a lot of time outs.
Also i fired ethereal and i tried to trace the packets when requesting for www.techrepublic.com and from the outputs of ethereal there are so many DNS request for techrepublic that has failed or no such name and these errors came both from our main and secondary DNS servers, although the website for techrepublic loads it took so many seconds before it can load. Then i check the DNS settings for both our main and secondary DNS servers and on their forwarders settings both are configured to make each other as their forwarders, and by changing this and re-configure it to make our broadband router as their forwarder and walah! great internet speed.... and for now im just observing it for any changes

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
Somehow there is a little improvement on the speed, but still most of the sites we check takes more than 10 seconds before it loads.
Other problems we experience before is that the browser cant load the site, you have to refresh it twce in order for the website to load. Also when we download yahoo it keeps on aborting whats strange is that when i turn on the firewall of the win03 R2 we can download ym very fast but we cant access the internet, but if i turned it on its back to the original problem. Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
This is definitely a DNS issue. I am not sure where to start on this except to check and double check all the settings compared to the old server.
Check to make sure the DNS server is looking at the ISP for name resolution, and all the clients need to look at the server for DNS records. |

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
ok, i have now ask for the ip addresses of our ISP's DNS servers and configured it as our forwarders.

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
If the clients were looking outside of the LAN for name resolution it will cause quite a delay.

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
Does setting our DNS server forward to our isp's DNS servers means our users are looking outside of our LAN for name resolution.
Also sometimes i get confuse, about the difference of the default gateway and DNS in the IP Setting configuration. is it important to place a default gateway if there is already a DNS or viseversa. |

Re: Win03 R2 Configuration
as far as the clients are concerned for name resolution, there is no other name server. Your DNS should look at the ISPs DNS but not the clients.
Client config should be something like this. Default gateway should be the IP of the DHCP DNS should point to DNS's IP addy |
