Question domain issues

Hello,

Right now we have a domain issue. Our primary domain server keeps crashing, now of course I cant just lower it from the domain since it is already raise it in the domain. We have another server that is the secondary. My question is, the server that is crashing, how do we take it off, and raise the second one as the primary, do we just turn the crash one off and raise the second one just like that or is there a procedure we need to do.

Thank you

Re: domain issues

Just run DCPROMO on the server you want to remove. Make sure your second one IS functioning as a Domain Controller.

Question Re: domain issues

dcpromo then what, ya the second server is recognized as one of the domain controllers in AD sites and services, so I run DCpromo what do I select, also what do I do once removed, raise the second one?

Thank you

Re: domain issues

Check AD computers & users and make sure both server names appear as DC's.

If the second server is a domain controller you do not have to raise it's level. They did away with "back up" controllers with win 2000. Effectively they function as peers. You need to DCPROMO the "Problem" server out of the domain. Running DCPROMO on the "Problem" server and choosing the options to remove it from the domain should make Server 2 the only DC in the Forrest.

Re: domain issues

If the problem server has any FSMO roles, do you not need to transfer them to the second server before demoting the problem server via DCPROMO?

Also, don't forget to reconfigure any clients that use the problem DC server as a DNS server as it won't be one once demoted from a DC to a member server.
