DNS Servers not Communicating
Two of our win2000 dns servers stopped communicating with each other a while back, thus no longer replicating. We have a primary and a secondary. It used to be that on NS1 it would also be connected to NS2. We could click NS2 and see what was there.
Now, I try to add a connection to NS2, and it says it's not available. I open cmd and "ping ns2" and it pings just fine. I have attached an image for you to see what I see. I appreciate any help. Thx. |

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
check the trust between the two servers on the domain. You can find this in AD sites and services.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
My Mis-Take. DNS has to be properly running before you can even set up a trust. Let me look at something else real quick.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
Can you ping the server by it's name? "ping -a ns2" And see if it resolves. Also check the AD to see how that server is listed.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
Just tested again, same as shown in first post image, I am able to ping each other by name from each machine. I'm not sure what you mean by AD. Bear in mind I recently acquired responsibility for these servers, so am not familiar with the DNS gui setup as I am a Linux guy. Long before this, I know they communicated properly with each other. However, at one point evidently something was changed, but I have no idea what that might be. Now I am attempting to fix it since it has become my responsibility to do so. However, I am typically in the learning stages of windows server related. I appreciate the help.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
Sorry to be obvious but is the 'DNS Server' service started ok on NS2?
If so, what happens when you use the IP address of NS2 in the DNS 'Select Target Computer" window rather than the name 'NS2'? |

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
That is the way I was think RGV. I was wandering if the service has disappeared or not or is not starting properly.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
My bad... IIS shouldnt be running on these. It was installed, but disabled, had the snap-in in that section, which was causing that error. I removed IIS and the error is now gone. Had nothing to do with the dns problem..

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
No, original problem is still there. All I did was find a different issue that I thought was related, and only the new issue was fixed. This seems to be unusual, I cant find much in Google on this particular problem.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
It really looks as though DNS isn't running properly on NS2 from the description so far.
The screenshots you originally posted seem to sugest you're trying to open DNS remotely (From NS1?) - what happens when you try and open DNS at the console directly on NS2? As an aside - Are these servers running as standalone DNS servers or are they in an Active Directory domain? If the latter are they both Domain Controllers? Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
Yes I can access dns on ns2. Neither one can see the other. For each machine to trust each other, you have to have Active Directory, which isnt installed. So someone either uninstalled that, or they were NT4 and someone upgraded them to 2000. I know under NT4 you could create a trust without AD, but with 2000 AD is required. I know of no other way to do it... but I dont know what will happen with existing DNS if I install AD now.

Re: DNS Servers not Communicating
Are both joined to the AD as DNS. If they are both running DNS properly they should both be listed as DNS servers. Check that and let us know.
