DHCP - IP running out

Hello all.

My DHCP server says that its running out of addresses but I have only 100
leases. My scope is of about 225 addresses but under scope leases I only see
about 100 computers/leases. Where are the rest? I had to change the lease
duration to 1 day but that didnt help too much. If I go through the list of
leases and find ones that are not in there and ping them, I get no replies.
That means that they are availble but DHCP is not giving them out....?????
Some users do also connect via RDP so some leases show up as RAS.

Any clues???????? Thanks guys.

ps...I do have an some exclusion of about 30 addresses. But there should be
another 100 or close to it. They all cant be being used. I have to go and
delete some addresses to give to users....

Thanks.

What is the DHCP scope set at right now? What are the other DHCP settings?

Re: DHCP - IP running out

RRAS does have trouble giving addresses back aswell as reserving them for itself.
i would recommend getting RRAS to give addresses out from a pool rather than relaying them from DHCP.

Re: DHCP - IP running out

in the RRAS console, right click on your server name then click properties. under the IP tab click on "static address pool" then enter the range of ip address.

Re: DHCP - IP running out

Thanks. I will try that. Do I need to add that pool in the exclusions in the DHCP console?

Re: DHCP - IP running out

Nevermind. I found out that you DO have to add that pool in the exclusions.

But it still dosent make sence!!!!!! There are atleast a hundred address are not being given out. I cant see them in the address leases and I cannot see them in the exclusions and I cannot ping them......?????...so where the heck are they!!!!!! The statistics show that only 1 or 2 are availble where there should be atleast 100 of them...??????

Thanks.

Re: DHCP - IP running out

you should have the RRAS pool on a different subnet to stop confusion, also so that RRAS has nothing to do with DHCP to terminate if this is your problem. (RRAS does not always make sence to some people. its a bit hard to wrap your head around what it is actually doing.)

Re: DHCP - IP running out

Thanks for the help.

So you think the RRAS is the problem....

Actually I dont really want to make another subnet just for RRAS. We have about 2-5 people using terminal services are any given time so I just took 8 address and put them in them in the exclusions and the static pool for RRAS.

If RRAS is the one "holding" those address which are not being used, then how can I make it release so DHCP can give it out?....If RRAS is indeed the problem.....

Re: DHCP - IP running out

Yes, i do think it is RRAS.

i still would recommend having RA clients on a different subnet to get rid of the possibility altogether, it isn't a big deal should usually be done that way regardless of if they have this issue or not.

i would either wait now untill the address timeout and see if that has fixed the problem or delete RRAS altogether and start again.

are you working with server 2000? or 2003?

Re: DHCP - IP running out

I have Windows 2000 server.

Thats what I was leaning towars. Since I made the changes, I will wait for sometime to see if all the other addresses get released and if that fixes the problem, if not then we will see. Thanks for all your help.

Re: DHCP - IP running out

FIXED!!!!!!

Right click on the scope and select reconcile. Not sure why I didnt think of this before. The reconcile checks the DHCP DB against the server's registry and makes changes with the descripencies accordingly. Once I did that every one of those missing address showed up and are now avalible. Thanks.
