Repair Win2K Installation w/o overwriting documents?

My sister's Windows 2000 computer has contracted the dreaded 0x0000007B stop error on boot (INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE). We read the knowledge base article, and tracked down what was applicable, and we've come up with nothing.

We ran SpinRite on the drive itself, thinking it might be data corruption, but the drive is fine.

Our only option now is to restore/repair the Windows 2000 installation so she can get her documents off.

What's the proper method of repairing the installation so that it leaves the documents alone? She is terrified of losing her pictures and documents from the past few years.

Thanks for your help.

Hi,
You could try an over the top installation. I have done this on my Windows ME machine and it did not affect any files etc.

Asyn,

Did you finally resolve your problem and what did you end up doing? I'm going through the same problem right now and the repair option did not work for me nor did the recovery console.

Please update us.
