upgrading from exchange 5.5 to 2007 :(

what i need to do is get all our exchange data from 5.5 to exchange 2007. at the moment i have server 2003 std PDC and a win NT4 SP6 BDC. our mail exchange is on the NT BDC. we are purchasing a new server and windows 2003 std to run exchange 2007. given the technology of the nt4 server in place upgrades are out of the question.

Will exchange 2007 migrate data from exchange 5.5 if i installed the server fresh on the network? (i can dream)

any migration tools around that would copy the data?

upgrade path 5.5-->2003-->2007

any help would be awsome.

Re: upgrading from exchange 5.5 to 2007 :(

The exchange tools in 2007 are far more superior to those in 5.5 and 03.
If you setup a new server and give it a new name and connect to your existing PDC you can use the utility built into 5.5 to migrate mailboxs and public folders over to the new box.

Tools>Move Mailbox.

The only issues you might run into would be any mailbox's containing corrupt items will not be moved.

Let me know once you have your new server in place and I can be of more assistance during your migration.

Re: upgrading from exchange 5.5 to 2007 :(

You cannot transition to Exchange 2007 directly. You need to first migrate to Exchange 2000 or 2003 and then you can transition to 2007.

I can't say I've ever tried that. i'm not sure how that would work?

I know if you have a volume license agreement you can download Exchange 2003 still. Also, venders still carry the media for 2003. You may want to contact a reseller of Microsoft software.

Re: upgrading from exchange 5.5 to 2007 :(

WOW.. think we have found a genious!
no were could i find was is it documented that it was posible from 5.5 to 2007 without the middle man (2000 or 2003). i too would also like the procedure to do this as well as any flaws you might find along your travels.

here below is the compatibility list i found from the microsoft website about outlook with exchange 2007

outlook 97/98 will not run and outlook 2k may run but is unsupported.
outlook 2002/xp will run but will not have all features.
outlook 2003 will run but a couple of features will be disabled/wont work.
outlook 2007 fully compatible.

i hope you are trouble free with your imposible migration but something tells me you playing with fire.

Good Luck!

Ed
