permissions question
I was wondering if anyone knows how windows saves folder permissions. The reason I ask is my file server is acting up real bad and I would like to reinstall the OS or move the folders to another machine. The files are all contained on the D logical drive and the OS is on C. Does anyone know if I reinstall the OS will it wipe out all the permissions on the D drive? Or if I move the folders to another machine is there a way to keep the permissions? Thanks.

If you are the administrator then you needs to take ownership of all of the files in order to prevent access violations while attempting to move the data. This might help in resolving the root cause. I would not advise re-installing the OS unless you have to. The folder permissions do carry...

Re: permissions question
If you move the folders, it will retain the permissions. If you copy the folders, it will not retain their permissions.
Since I backup to tape everyday with Veritas, we can restore folders and it is restore their permissions. If I am correct, Windows backup will do the same. You might test this. |

Re: permissions question
Forgot to add. You may want to make sure that the permissions, on the folder, are not inherited from a parent folder or drive. If it is you may need to replace inherit permissions with specific ones to that folder.

Re: permissions question
Also, IIRC, if you do rebuild, even though the permissions are still there, they won't be valid as the SID's referenced (how Windows sees users and groups) won't be the same (except for built-in groups/users like Administrator, etc.)
