Connected Backup consumes System

I have a Windows 2000 Server w/ service Pack 4. I am using a Connected DataProtector 7.1.5 to backup the system. The problem I'm having is that the backup process is taking HOURS instead of minutes to back up as few as 100 files. The process is also consuming 100% of the CPU for that entire time. It also takes HUGE amounts of time just to display the Backup View/ Explore to pick files. BUT from the Home page, if I select 'Backup Now' the backup proceeds normally and only takes minutes to backup the files.

One other factor MAY be relevant. The backup was running fine until about 6 weeks ago. At that time, an action was inadvertantely done that caused MS FrontPage to flag most of the files in the Web site to be backed up. I think it might have been to recalculate the links for the site. This triggered a HUGE backup of about 25000 files, that took about 3 days and 5 log files. Since then the backup has never completed in a normal time.

I havere-installed the Connected DataProtector to no avail. I have also tried proxy and no proxy settings, I'm on a corporate intranet, but neither made a difference. I understand our firewall is configured to allow connected to work without a proxy.

This system is part of a corporate intranet, hence the Connected Backup, but our IT department is no longer providing support for Win 2K or able to fix the Connected DataProtector issue. We will be forced to upgrade the system soon, but in the mean time I'd like to get this fixed if possible.

I know this is a long shot, but any help would be appreciated. I only have a week to look at this so, any replies would be a big help.

My System

Re: Connected Backup consumes System

Just to make the standard checks, it isn't configured to run a full backup every time is it? If you've let one of these abnormally long backups run, you can most likely verify it is/isn't running a full backup in the backup log (even if configured otherwise, as something may be "forcing" it to run a full instead of an incremental). Also, is the server under heavy load when the backup runs? Are the files that are being backed up in use?

Re: Connected Backup consumes System

The first thing i did was check the logs and verified that Connected is running a partial backup. It's doing a search of files changed since the last backup. In most cases the number of files being backed up is 100-200 files only, many times less. Connected DataProtector is really a disaster recovery system. You can always recover the last version of any file that was backed up. Of course, it's configured to ignore most system files, and various other files that shouldn't be backed up in a corporate env. such as mpg, mp3, etc.

The server is not under heavy load at the time of the backups. They are scheduled to start between 2:00AM and 3:00AM. The actual start is random between those times.

I'm sort of thinking that something is going on on the backup server, but because I can't get support on the system, they won't check that out.
