TS Licensing

Hey guys, just a quick Q on TS Licensing. I want to make sure I understood this correctly...
If I have a Win2003 TS (assume licensing is Per Device), I need to buy a CAL for every XP Pro machine connecting to that TS.
But if I have a Win2000 TS, the unlimited built in CALs are issued to the XP Pro machines instead of buying CALs.

Am I misunderstanding the white papers, or does is this a no-brainer?

correct

unless you were granfathered in (you bought 2003 server before specifed date. .... but not many ppl did)

Install 2003, buy the calls and be done with it. 2000 may be free but lacks alot of device support and a pain to manage. also can not map local drives onto 2000 TS .. but can on 2003. 2003 is also easier to secure

If you only have a few clients you can buy 1 or 2 decent servers, install 2003 + vmware server 1.0 (free) and host 4 or so XP desktops per server .... more depending on hardware. and have the users RDP onto their own desktops (inside the xp pro virutal PCs running on the Vmware server host)

you will need to grant the users VPN or setup give the users static IPs (inside ips) and foward it to a external port (static NAT) will need 1 external static IP per vmware workstation ... s check with ISP.

By far the easiest way is to buy a SSL VPN, sonic wall has one for 499 that is great for upto 1.5BM of traffic (device is capped at 1.5mb of vpn speed)
you will bypass a TON of TS pain.

I will eventually have 400 computers using TS. right now I'm only looking at a few, but I want to set it up correctly the first time, and make it easy to make a TS farm. The company isn't going to spend the $$ on 2003 CALs if 2000 will do it. They'll (not me) give up manageability for $$...

I'm looking for that grandfather date for the 2003 TS. anyone know the MS link to that?
