Can I Obtain Computer Hardware/Software Info. For Every Computer Via the Network?

Hello,

I am a Jr. Admin and am trying to do some research to find out if there is any third-party (or better) company that offers services to allow obtaining computer information via the network? We want a list of every computer's hardware and if possible software as well without having to go around to every computer. Is this possible? If so, what options are there?

It would depend on the scale of your network and how in-depth you want your statistics. IBM's Tivoli Desktop Management Software allows you to take software and hardware inventories on individual machines and can upload that information to a web accessible database.

Another product is Microsoft’s SMS (Systems Management Server).This can also do hardware and software inventories, I have not used SMS myself but I am pretty sure the whitepapers say it can do that for you.

If you want to go to an even easier way WSUS (Microsoft) will allow you to take those inventories, however they will not be as nearly in-depth as the enterprise level products of SMS or Tivoli.

SMS Server will do this, and a lot more. However, it is a specialty in and of itself, and requires some pretty potent hardware.

HERE are some other options.
