Tips Command line stuff, etc & intro.
Hey, I love Vbulletin...
New here, just wondering, been searching for tips/tricks command line stuff, start/run executables etc. or undocumented hints.... need to catch up, and at a busy help desk remoting around to XP and Svr03/2k, gotta be as fast as possible, rather not have to make new shortcuts on everyone's servers or waste bandwidth browsing the icons in admin tools, etc... you know what i mean. sori if in wrong spot, need links, tia ~ J. :) |

Well with all the little tricks in the CLI aside, there are a few keyboard shortcuts that will make your day brighter. That little windows key is your friend, believe it or not. Want to get at the Run window? Just press <Windows>+R. How about minimize all those blasted windows? Minimize all windows with <Windows>+M or Show your desktop with <Windows>+D. Those are simply a couple in a slew of handy shortcuts. Look at this KB article on the Microsoft website for a good several pages worth of handy dandy shortcuts.
These will make your life a lot easier. Last edited by Cellus; 10-05-2006 at 04:25 PM. |

nice, i never used <windows> as a shortcut, good stuff especially since xp doesn't default to my computer on the desktop so i'm always asking people to go to the start button and they get a little confused... (i wonder what Vista will change...)
i use run all the time for getting to cmd window, is there a shortcut to open up a command line? i always need ip addresses to remote to, or computer name, but <win>+Break solves that one - from your link, tx.

not on that list:
<win>+v does something, i get an hourglass, but i don't know what and it's not on the list ![]() ok, it's speech recognition, but it was behind the other windows...? <win>+h is a handwriting recognition thing, not easy w/ mouse, tablet would help... <win>+b takes the focus off the current window w/ focus, not sure why i'd want to do that tho...

There's a nifty little thing you can get off the Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP site called Command Prompt Here. This nifty little tool allows it so any context menu (right-click) you do on an object in Windows Explorer will give an added option to "Open Command Window Here" - a new command prompt window will open up and be located in the directory you opened from.
Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP There are a lot of other little nifty ones there as well, so take a look. Last edited by Cellus; 10-06-2006 at 08:07 AM. |
