NT4.0 Server To Server 2003 Migration
I would like (idealy) to migrate my domain from the way too old NT4 Server to a Windows 2003 Server. When I run dcprom on the 2003, I get the following message:
The domain name hi-tek might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain hi-tek: The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.hi-tek Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV records required to locate a domain controller for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a domain controller is added to a domain. They are updated by the domain controller at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with following IP addresses: 207.124.63.2 - One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone: hi-tek . (the root zone) For information about correcting this problem, click Help. domain: Hi-tek NT4: 207.124.63.2 (Server) Server2003x64SP1:2007.124.63.3 (server1) Subnet: 255.255.255.192 Gateway: 207.124.63.1 DNS: 4.2.2.1 DNS2: 4.2.2.2 I get this message no matter whom I claim is the DNS server (ie: the NT4.0 Server). I am lost and really would ove some help as this NT4 Server is soon to be dead, and Microsoft no longer offers any support for it (how convenient) Philippe |

Rename your server
I am in the process of converting old 4.0 doamins to 2003.
The error is ocurring because 2003 does not like special characters in the netbios name. It cannot create the correct dns AD records. good name server bad name server_nt or server-nt Correct this name problem and you can go forward. A word of caution: I changed my name and carefully planned. I got snagged by the default group policy that gets loaded when you upgrade to 2003. All my network browsing failed. I am still looking for why this is and how to modify the Default GP to allow this browsing. If anyone knows about this, please post and/or email me Thanks. |
