Question Sharing help

Hi there, have you wiped and re-installed the server or are you using it straight from school. Do you have the full admin password and is it still running a domain ?

I Did a clean wipe and reinstall of the server so the only thing left was the OS. i went to the folder i want to shared and went to sharing and security option. went to share this folder and put a name and comment and applied the changes but i still cant see the shared folder over the network. i'm not sure what i'm forgetting.

thanks

My System

If you have Windows Firewall on, you will need to have File and Printer Sharing as an enabled exception.

Are you trying to share on the network, or outside the network?

My windows firewall is setup to allow the folder to be shared with other computers on the network.

for now i'm trying to set it up so i can just share it though the network. if i can get that setup maybe off of the network next.

I think it is odd.
But you might check the workgroup or the domain.
Make sure you all in the network in the same workgroup in order to browse network share each other.
If in domain make sure in the same domain unless there is specific cross domain trust is set.
To test you could try open your share by using direct address such as \\computername\sharename
Or try to do ping test to make sure it is connected correctly.

Well all the computers are setup in the same workgroup called workgroup. but i still cant seem to connect, when i go \\computername\\shared nothing works, i can ping the computers fine.

I swear its the most simple thing causing the most problems.

Permissions

Under the sharing and security tab go to permissions. Type in the following:

everyone

you should be able to access the folder.

My guess would be only the administrator account has access to the folders. I do have a question about something said above though. You said you wiped everything and only have the OS, just to be sure you did do a complete reinstall right?

Dyno, is there any error message that pop up?
I've tried to simulate your problem but the only thing that keep me blocked from accessing is the firewall.
So far the default access rights permission is Everyone allowed to read. So I don't think the permission is the trouble in here Levi.

Bayangan would the firewall be an issue through the internal server, i know i dont have it setup so people outside my network can access it.

Hi
check that the drive you want to share is shared for everyone and also that the permissions also everyone is included and corect permissions ticked
also check that these settings are being inherted by the folders and directories below. check to see if its a hidden pation with a $ sign infront of the drive letter , To be honest to trouble shoot this i would open everything up and lock it down later when the drive is shared even create a new share whithout the $ sign

just a few question

what operating systems are the other workstions?
if you go to my networks and try to access the Server there do you get and error or login box..?

Some more questions:

1. What is the sharename? Does it have a "$" sign at the end?
2. Can you see the computer through My Network Places? If so, can you see the share at all when you double-click the computer?
3. If you click "Start...run" and type \\computername\sharename and press return, what exactly happens?
4. Try to map a network drive to \\computername\sharename - what happens?
5. How are your computers connected together? Router? Switch? Hub?

Thanks
