I'm pretty sure you can't change to primary domain server after installation. Maybe a repair install would do it? |

you can only go from PDC to BDC and BDC to PDC once installed.
There is no way other then reinstall .... well there is a 3rd party utility but i would not use in production. I can not think of name but its out there .. and works |

![]() Please read this. I never said anything about NEW servers. Of course new servers can handle 2k or 2k3 ... They're new! I'm talking about the OS as a whole. NT4 is less resource intensive (an NT4 file/print server is happy with a PIII-450 and 256MB of RAM ... Try 2k3 on that). I talked about simplicity. NT4's Domain approach is simpler than 2k's AD (a poor interpretation of X.500 if you ask me. Novel's NDS had it right 10 years ago). I specifically mentioned a small network environment (ie the Small Business), which does not need in-house DNS, container level security, or much of the additional overhead inherent in 2k/2k3. With the proper use of global groups and the correct implementation of share and NTFS level security, NT4 can still provide two of the most used services in any company - File and Print sharing. Add to that MS Proxy Server, and Exchange Server 5.5, and the continued value of NT4 becomes evident. |

I also like nt4 because it uses so little resources. I also like how simple and easy to troubleshoot it is. I just decided to put xp on it because I didn't need a server. You only need 2k3 if you have a large network and a monster server to install it on. Nt4 can run on a small semi-old desktop machine.

i have run 2003 on a P3 500 with 512 ram, works just fine. You dont need a monster server unless you are putting to many apps on it. Windows is not a mainframe, you should segment your services. if you are taxing your 2003 boxes its due to poor planing and implementation

I didn't mean monster super extreme mondo gaming machine, but nt requires a minimum of 16 megs of ram and a super slow processor! (maybe it was 32 megs of ram, but 2k3 couldn't even start on 64!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The thing is, Windows NT Server uses the real basic stuff you need. You can get more from sites and all, but the NT kernels ae way less resource intesnive as his succesors. Windows 2000 introduced simpler applications in order for you to create your craP (I don't use it so...lol!). Windows 2003 is all these automatic roles and all .File printer sharing on NT is far faster than 2003. Let me tell you this: My Pentium 4 machine will run Windows NT 4 server, but the only cons on it is that the configurations aren't in a general Control panels...they are seperate and hard to find at times.
