explorer.exe freezing while browsing video files
Hi,
I have a windows 2000 professional OS. Recently, I've been having this problem where explorer.exe freezes on me. It only happens when I click on a .avi file (not every time. It happens about 1 out of 5 times). I can restart explorer.exe, but its kinda annoying because about half the icons in my task manager disappear, plus, it didn't do this before so somethings probably wrong. I think it might have something to do with the fact that I recently installed windows media player 9. It only happens with video files, and I think that maybe the windows media player window that shows up on the side of the folder browser might be causing it. (If anyone knows how to disable that, please post and tell me how) Another thing that might be causing it is recently I installed a new hdd. Its SATA and since my Mobo only supports PATA i had to install a PATA-SATA converter card thing. All my movies are on the new hdd. Thats the only other recent hardware/software change that I can think of. Something that reinforces the windows media player 9 idea is that when i play .mkv files, which are not associated with WMP and doesn't cause the little window to show up, explorer.exe does not crash. Any help would be great! |

Hi there...
Please try the following: Click 'Start' then 'Run' and type the following into the 'open' box: regsvr32 u/shmedia.dll Click OK. Reboot and try accessing your AVI files. Hope that helps :-) |

Search for the file to make sure its there....failing that, download one online and copy to your system32 folder, then try to unregister it.
Doing so stops explorer from 'previewing' the avi file to gather information such as bitrate, resolution etc. Sometimes explorer has a problem doing this so crashes - that command should work though as long as the dll file is there. May also be an idea to upgrade to the latest divx codec??? |

Have attached a rar file called avifix. Download, unrar and you will be able to right click on it and select install - which should clear shmedia.dll for you. The fix was made for XP machines but i'm reliably informed that it will work for w2k :-)

I installed the avifix thing, and it didnt do anything? I clicked install and nothing popped up or anything. The avi files still preview. Should I restart my computer after I install it?
Thanks a lot for the help |
