NT has forgotten how to download....permissions problem?

The victim: Gateway with NT4 SP6
The problem: Will load websites fine, but absolutely refuses to download anything from internet or from CD. Attempted to boot with Knoppix but doesn't have enough memory to boot. Suspect spyware but cannot do any type of scan. Any ideas?

Have determined that part of the problem is that RWX permissions have somehow gotten messed up. Have tried resetting them under Security/Permissions tab but it hasn't helped.

Why cant you scan? Does it not work or do you not have any sypware software installed? If so can you download the software somewhere else and then install it and run it?

In internet options/advanced, is the box ticked to allow active content from cd's to run on this computer?

Yep...it's almost as if someone got into Policy Editor and boogered up the settings.

Check your Event Logs to see if there are any clues.

Also, can you connect to a share from another machine? If so, copy the antispyware install files that way.

Also ... What RWX permissions?

Nothing in Event Logs....refuses to run anything thrown at it from outside its own drive.. Makes me think of a *nix box that has had all the file permissions (RWX) turned off.

Try going to a workstation and connecting to \\server\c$ ... You'll need to be logged onto the workstation as a Domain Admin. Create a folder and copy the antispyware install files to the server. Install and see what they find.

If this does not work, there is another solution. Maybe.

Is this the only server?

Is it a PDC?

If yes to both, build a second server (you can use the same license, as MS does allow concurrent use for the purpose of migration to another machine) as a BDC. Don't worry about extraneous drivers, just load SP6a. Promote it to PDC, then remove the sick machine from the domain (shut it down and delete its machine account). Reload NT on it as a BDC, load all your drivers and SP6a, promote it back to PDC, and remove the second from the domain.

Well, looks like it's time to backup your data, wipe, and reinstall.
