Evil hardware wizard

On boot-up I get four pop-ups informing me that the Hardware Wiz has found new hardware. Pop-ups 1 & 2 invite me to load a driver but neglect to inform what sort of hardware it might be, making picking an inf file pretty much an exercise in futility; nrs. 3&4 are for my two DVD drives, both of which are functioning quite well. I cancel each one and all goes unevenfully until the next boot-up.

I've tried uninstalling the drives and reinstalling their drivers via the Wiz, but next boot-up he rediscovers them and wants me to load their drivers. I've tried reinstalling the drivers via Device Manager--same result.

I don't have a clue what triggers the first two. There is a ? "Other Devices" in the Device Manager tree with two ? "Unknown Device" under it but their Properties sheet says only "This device is not configured correctly" with an option to reinstall a driver. The Event Log is clean.

Is there a way to disable the hardware wizard (preferably wiith a stake through his heart), perhaps by disabling the Plug and Play service? Failing that, is there some way to trace what is prompting this activity? It's not so much the anoyance as it is not knowing what's causing it!
Thanks -
John

Does it ever give you an option that says do not ask me to install this device next time something similar after the driver installation fails?

No. The DVD driver install does not fail. Since the drives are generic, if I uninstall them, the drivers get installed during the boot process. Whatever is triggerinig the found new hardware routine just never gets reset.
