win 98 to 2000 with lots of data in harddisk
Hi,
I am running Win 98 with the following config: P3, 500 MHz, 320 MB RAM HD C: 6 GB - Win 98 HD D: 127GB - this is where I store all my photos, movies, mp3 and is almost full I am planning to install Win 2000 on my C drive. I was going to reboot in DOS mode, do an "fdisk, format c:/s" to remove existing partition and create a new active primary partition. I have copied the Win 2000 CD in to my D:/win2k. Install win2k from my D drive. I have these questions - Win 2000 uses NTFS. If I wipe off C and install win2k with NTFS, would I still be able to read my D Drive? - Does Win 2000 support the Win98 file system as well as NTFS? - Would it be better to back up my D drive and make both my C and D to be NTFS? - What is the best way to migrate to Win 2000 and what are the things that I have to watch for. Would appreciate any help in this regard. I am fed up with Win 98. Thanks, -S - |

Welcome to TSF
Backing up your data is always the Best solution when making any changes.
Then if anything goes wrong you have It. To install W2k you will need the cd, Put it in the cd and boot from your cdrom. it will take you in to setup asking what you want to do with the existing windows , what partition you want to put it on then repartition and format your drive in NTFS. it would be best to endup with both drives formated in NTFS. No fdisk required. Not sure that W2k would install from a HDD anyway. ![]()

Thanks, life of HD
Thanks for your prompt reply!
How long do these Hard drives perform reliably? My C drive (6 G) is 6 years old (Dell -Western Digital). My D drive (160 G, but win 98 sees only 127G) is 2 years old. Once I formatted and reinstalled Win 98 on my C drive and it has been acting weirdly ever since. Do you think it is advisable to just disconnect C drive, create 2 partitions in D and install Win 2K on one of the partitions? Do you foresee any problems doing so, any suggestions...? Thanks, -S |

W2k Also has the drive restriction This lin explains why and tells you what to do about it.
Just remember the data you had on the drive will be lost. Should work ok. ![]() Just remember to chamge the jumper settings on the drives.
