Win2k Update Roll Up 1 caution
Advice to the wise.
Be very careful with the latest Win2k Update Roll Up #1. Back up your data and only do the update at this point if you really think you need to. There appear to be some issues that MS still needs to work out. Do some research, there are some issues with this Roll Up. Update Roll Up #1 appears to have killed the TCP/DHCP/DNS on one of my Win2k PRO machines. Nothing I tried seemed to fix it. It is also not clear to me if MS is also calling this Service Pack #5 as well?? I have not had enough time to research this issue in depth, as my machine will not fully boot since un-installing the Roll Up Update. So I am in the process of recovering files and rebuilding the machine from the ground up. 2 of my other Win2k PRO machines appear to have taken the update without any issues, yet!! I may try the Update Roll Up before I waste any time loading anything other than the OS on the machine to see if I have issues again on this machine again. Wish me luck. Others please post any strange things you see as well with this Win2k Roll Up Update. JamesO Last edited by JamesO; 07-30-2005 at 06:10 PM. |

James, is it possible that you have some kind of a hardware issue or possibly some kind of a third party software problem? The only reason I ask is that I have installed the Windows 2000 Rollup Package #1 on multiple machines (15+) via windows update without any problems.
Also, it is my understanding that Microsoft will be releasing a few "rollup packages" for Windows 2000 instead of a Service Pack 5. I read somewhere once the exact reasoning as to why and I think it was something to the effect that Microsoft no longer fully supports Windows 2000 (only security updates) so the rollup packages will take the place of future service packs. |

Do not think the problem is hardware related.
May be some conflict with other installed software, but my 3 machines have similar software installed. The update shows up as SP5 from what I can tell?? Although I recall the MS site indicating it was Roll Up #1. I did some research and found a lot of complaints on servers and stand alone machines. Some of the stand alone machines did have similiar issues where TCP/IP did not work correctly. I had problems getting DHCP to work. When I manually configured IP addresses I could ping anything with an IP address, however, DNS did not work. Unable to browse anything, although I could ping it with an IP address. Tried a number of TCP stack repair utilities, nothing worked. Once SP5 was unloaded, machine would not fully boot. It will be collecting dust for a few weeks as I will be out of town and kids with be in my hair until school starts back up!! I may try to restore part of the machine if I have a few spare moments?? Iv'e not had any trouble yet, I have put it on about 10 or so machines so far. I was cautious at first and put it on a couple of test machines (including my own
) first for a couple weeks and all has been well (touches very large peice of wood ) Oh, and efehlhaber is correct in what he is saying, and it is not a service pack so should not show up as SP5! but rollup 1 in Add/Remove programs. HTH. |

Does anyone know what SP5 really is? This was what was listed on the updates for my machine which is un-installed, which seems to have caused my problem where the machine will not fully load Windows. I had the network problems prior to unloading the SP5, which was the last update that I performed.
I did not see the Roll Up listed on the machine with problems. The machine I updated was the first one of my 3, maybe MS released an update (SP5) that they since pulled or changed something? As I recall, the problem machine was updated 1-2 days before the ones I have had no issues with. Also I hope everyone has seen the Win2k update that was released this week for the Plug & Play worm problem. I assume everyone has had sucess with this Plug & Play worm update? I am on the road, so I will not have time to get to this until next week. JamesO |

Re: Win2k Update Roll Up 1 update caution
I am unable to install "Update Rollup 1" (W2K Pro, SP4) and the message I continually get is "Setup unable to copy file system.adm" about 2/3 of the way through the installation. Can anyone here please help me with this problem, as my computer continually freezes without warning, to the point where the only way I can turn the computer off is by pulling the power plug from the back & then plugging it back in (when the computer will automatically run & reboot).
My purpose for downloading the "Update Rollup 1" is that it's the only thing preventing me from downloading the trial version of AVG 8.5 Antivirus, because there is currently no antivirus protection on this computer. It was given to me, so there are no disks that would come with a "self-purchased" computer. Please help (if you can...); Thanks so much. |
