Windows 2003 Server

Howdy,

Yes, I appologize for posting this question in this forum. But I feel it's most relevant here.

I have installed Windows 2003 Server on P3 1gig. I have a USB 2.0 hard drive that I store my mp3's on. My problem is that w2003s does not recognize the drive, I have even tried two different usb2.0 controllers. To verify my hardware, I slapped another hd in the system and loaded Win XP and the drive functions perfectly.

So to summarize. I am having trouble getting my Maxtor external USB 2.0 HDD to be seen in Windows 2003 Server.

TIA for any help yall can provide,
Josh

Hi, there. I have a similar problem, but I am several days behind you in finding the solution. Did you manage to find one?

Thanks for any info

Nope, sorry.

I just built a new PC (Shuttle XPC) and decided to try my problem out in it. Guess what, it still didnt work. I put XP on there and the HD worked fine. It seems to be a problem with W2K3S.

Are you using the evaluation version or an OEM/RETAIL verson?

Thanks
Josh

I am using the evaluation version and I know that the problem is strictly related to W2K3 and USB2 external devices. But I don't know how to work around it.

Probably I do not have the required drivers, but where to find them?

Thanks anyway,

Hobb

why would you want to run 2003 server if you have xp? I would think that that os just isnt designed for things like external hd's.

But maybe I'm dumb.

you can simply turn the 2003 server version into a workstation, however some things do not work (or at least i cannot get them to work)

as for the reason for such experiments - i have my comp running 24/7 and the increased stability of w2k3 is always welcome, the speed of this OS is presumably favourable in comparison to XP (but I did not run the benchmarks myself)

Well, I just installed a gigabit network in the house and will be using the server box as a web/ftp/email/dhcp/domain server. I have all my mp3's and movies on an external hd, so you can see my desire to hook it up to the server. The only real reason I'm setting up the domain is to require authentication for wireless users.

Perhaps with a SP M$ will have this problem fixed, although I would think that they would have caught this already in their "debug" sessions.

Thanks for the replies,
Josh

this is shurely a driver problem - i had the same issue when trying to install an usb2.0 CDR/RW to my P4C800deluxe.the bios told me there is a device attached and started, win2k3server told me it is not...so i forced win2k3 to use the XPDrivers for the USB2.0 interface and *surprise, surprise* it works now.
The problem is that the generic drivers for USB 2.0 are implemented in SP1 for XP and the same **** happened for W2k3 Server....

Could you be a little bit more specific, PenDragoN? How would you find and install the right XP drivers for a USB2 external disk storage device? I am a layman in this field, so I would appreciate any help.

I guess I should have mentioned that I already tried using XP drivers. I contacted Maxtor and they said that MS were responsible for the drivers... hmm.

Usb

From what I have heard from ppl installing 2003 server is that usb is deactivated in bios due to compatibility issues, this is some sort of quick fix from microsoft. Not sure how true this is but maybe its worth looking into.

Hmmm - don't think it's the bios...in normal operation Win2k3s is not able to flash any data to CMOS.
Sure, it's worth a look, but if this option is deactivated, the problem existst between keyboard and chair. But i don't think so. The problem here was that XP works with the hdd, W2k3s does not...definitively driver troubles.
