change computer name in win2kpro?
I am having trouble changing the name of a workstation...
I run a client server network. The file server is running windows 2000 server and the workstations are running windows 2000 professional. I had a hard drive crash and cannot recover it. No big deal as the SMART gave us a warning and we were able to back up the important files. I have a spare hard drive from another workstation that I wanted to use to replace the dead one. I put the spare hard drive in and started windows and logged into the administrator account, added the user name "station12". This hard drive came out of "station06". I logged off and tried to log into "station12", but was denied because I didn't have permission. How do I change the name (in this case from station06 to station12) on a windows 2000 professional workstation. I ran into this a few months ago with another workstation and just reformatted the drive, but would like to save the time and can't understand why I can't just change the computers name? I have the "Windows 2000 professional Bible" but the information in there is useless for this issue. Thanks for reading... Randy |

If I remember right, if you can log in you can go to CPanel, System, and in there on one of the tabs is an option to change PC name somewhere.
Hope it helps, BMR777

I am assuming you are on a domain. Are you trying to log into the workstation with the LOCAL Administrator account or the DOMAIN Administrator account? I suggest logging in with the LOCAL Administrator account, then adding the "station12" user account with the proper rights. When adding the "station12" account, make sure you putting your domain name under "domain" and not the local computer name. Then log out and log back in under the station12 account.
If you are not a part of a domain, then disregard this. |

try loggong on as local administrator as Ashler says then
right click my computer - select properties -select Network Identification then properties. It'll need a reboot after. You'll also have to add the "station12" account as Ashler says. If it's an AD domain - you've got a different set of issues to deal with, but since you say it's a workgroup & 2000pro - that shouldn't be an issue.
