Best Way to do this.
Hi,
I'll be running win2k server. I want to be able to run a website off the server, and also have it as a DHCP server. I have a cable modem and a router. What should i do. Should i use the router as a DHCP, and make it forward all web requests to the win2k server??? Should i use the router as a hub, and set up win2k to be a web server and DHCP server??? Thx. LoS |

If you use the web server as the dhcp server, it is both accessible from the outside and on the inside of your network. You're probably using IIS and despite anyone's best efforts, it probably has a hole that will be discovered relatively quickly. You need to take extraordinary efforts and measures to harden your M$ web server. Don't run any non-essential services, make sure your scripting is locked down. Watch out for Outlook in particular. HTH.

Hi,
I tried using the DMZ port off the router, but for some reason it wasn't working. I think it's because its a POS belkin router. Well I was running out of time and eventually did this. Two NICs on the server. One is getting the static IP and its sharing that to the 2nd NIC. The 2nd NIC plugs into the router (now just being used as a hub/switch) and the other 2 computers and i set the other computers' IPs, DNS and gateways. Everything is working fine. Haven't really worked on security. That's going to be next. I'm just waiting for the place to get a BETTER router :) Thx for the help. LoS |
