I can't log on

Hi. I can't log on to my Windows 2000 computer because when I type in my username and password it says, The local security polices of this system do not allow you to log on interactively (or something similar). It's the only admin on the computer so I can't change any security polices or anything. What should I do?

Is this computer a memebr of a domain?

If so, you may need to talk to the sys admins.

Nope, it's just a personal computer at my house.

All the users can log on except the administrator account, which is the problem.

Do you have a recuse disk (floppy disk that you would make from within Windows)?

If not, you could try a repair install of Win2k.

Do any of the other users have LOCAL administrator rights?

If so log on as one of them and change the administrator password to a new one, log off then on agaion as administrator using the new password. It must be done locally - click teh computer name in the log on info drop down box.

If not, as Chevy says - have you a rescue disk? or repair the install from the win2k CD.

I don't have any original disks that came with the computer (so no rescue disks) and none of the other users have local administrator rights. Do you need any disks or an administrator account to do a repair install?

Well, if you boot to the Win2k CD, and do a repair installation (not the recovery console option, but the one after that), you may fix the logon issue.

Ok .. no Win2k CD ... is there a sticker on the computer that has the Win2k Product ID (serial number) ... kinda silver with some blue ... ?

If so, then you at least have a valid license. You'll need to either contact the manufacturer for a new set of restore cd's, or you'll need to get your hands on a Win2k CD ... just be sure to use your Product Id.
